Aim for Consistency to Crush your Goals

(read time: 2 min)

I could beat myself up for not being perfect in getting my boosts out every week, and throw in the towel. Or I can nod my head toward my consistency over the long run, and know that I’m still right on track to changing their world by shattering shame, one boost at a time.

If you beat yourself up too when you aren’t perfect, and it makes you want to quit, then this boost is just for you.

YOUR BOOST

Whatever big thing you are working on, I want you to pick a key action, something that can be done in 30 minutes or less, and needs to be done over and over to reach your goal. Do that one action frequently and consistently in the same context every time.

The key here is context. You are creating a new brain pattern by doing that teeny-tiny, super-actionable action at the same time of day, or also with a warm cup of tea, or while listening to the same chill playlist, or while spritzing the same uplifting essential oil. You get the idea, the action is paired with the same environmental cue each time. Before you know it, you have developed a healthy consistent habit around your goal.

THE SCIENCE

Context is all about the environmental cues, and research out of the Netherlands demonstrates that when your brain consistently associates your actions with context, you begin to develop new effortless, and automatic habits that help you stay in course towards your goal. It’s the same neuroscience that backs development of bad habits, but flipped on its head to actually help you!

TAKE HOME

When you strive for perfection, you set yourself up to fail. Instead, strive for consistency in executing those tiny actions that lead up to big goals, and use the neuroscience of context to ensure that those actions become habits. When you do this, you’ll be nailing your goals in no time.

No shame, no guilt, just more good days,

Nicole
